SUMMARY:amse seminar - Yannis Ioannides

DESCRIPTION:We examine the impact of culture on the joint evolution of corr
uption and per capita GDP by augmenting the standard lifecycle model of cap
ital accumulation with two endogenous state variables that describe institu
tions and social norms\, and by two cultural parameters that proxy for indi
vidual propensity to anti-social behavior\, and for group individualism or
collectivism. We explore alternative political selection processes over ins
titutions\, defined over a one-dimensional agenda that pits "stronger" aga
inst "weaker" property rights. For societies that share the same economic f
undamentals but differ in culture\, our main theoretical finding is the fol
lowing: there exist cultural convergence clubs separated by a barrier that
corresponds to a bifurcation in the space of culture and initial social nor
ms. Societies with collectivist cultures and corruption-tolerant norms beha
ve very differently from all others. Outcomes in those societies feature: (
 a) highly nonlinear GDP and corruption dynamics\; (b) dominant roles for cu
lture and social norms as engines of institutional quality and growth\; (c)
majorities that favor diluted property rights\; and (d) slow convergence t
o balanced growth paths. These results agree with illustrative scatter plot
s with international data for several alternative measures of corruption or
culture\, raising the likelihood that formal econometric tests of them wil
 l prove fruitful.\\n\\nContact: Ewen Gallic: ewen.gallic[at]univ-amu.frAvne
