DESCRIPTION:**In this talk I will analyse debates on economic growth vs. th
 e environment from the perspective of philosophy of science\, in particular
  drawing on the recent discussions on how epistemic and non-epistemic value
 s interact in evidential reasoning. I identify two kinds of deep uncertaint
 y about the social-ecological systems\, one concerning the Hothouse Earth p
 athway\, and the other concerning non-capitalist societal pathway. Proponen
 ts and critics of economic growth responds to these kinds of uncertainty di
 fferently. I then explore to what extent such disagreements can be reduced
