SUMMARY:amse seminar - Randall Bluffstone

DESCRIPTION:Evidence appears to be building that direct exposure to natural
landscapes characterized by significant green cover\, such as forests\, ca
n help reduce chronic health conditions such as obesity\, stress\, hyperten
 sion\, chronic cardiovascular conditions\, depression\, anxiety\, cancer an
d diabetes. One way to encourage greater exposure to nature may be through
the use of nature prescriptions in which physicians and health care provide
rs recommend that their patients spend time in nature. The presentation wil
l discuss the implementation of a pilot field experiment examining the clin
ical use of nature-based versus conventional exercise recommendations in th
e US State of Oregon. We discuss preliminary empirical results related to w
hether nature prescriptions\, offered as one part of a patient’s overall
treatment plan\, can improve health-related behaviors and self-reported out
comes in clinical settings.  We also identify challenges with such field e
xperiments and offer recommendations for practitioners and researchers inte
rested in implementing and evaluating nature-based exercise programs to imp
 rove public health.\\n\\nContact: Nicolas Clootens : nicolas.clootens[at]un
