Abstract

*In this paper I investigate the link between affordable childcare provision, fertility and family structure. To do so, I exploit the staggered expansion of childcare coverage in France as a result of a series of national plans, using administrative data and information on childcare coverage at the municipality level. I use an event-study design to see if this expansion affected the transition to first and subsequent births, the probability to live in couple, to get married, or to divorce.

**This paper is a first study on high school value-added in France. Relying on rich data on all high school students who applied to higher education I estimate high school value-added in France between 2014 and 2017 for more than one million students. I study the impact of high school value-added on educational aspirations using applications made by 12th grade students for the first year of higher education. I find that attending a high school with one standard deviation higher value-added causes an increase in the probability of applying to selective programs by 3.7 percentage points. I also find heterogeneous effect according to social background and gender.
